The Advantages of Carrying your Baby
Baby carriers have been around for a long time in many different cultures. There are many reasons to carry your little one, from convenience to psychological rewards. Here are just a few of them:
- Recreate the feeling of the womb. This can help calm fussy babies and reduce crying in newborns. The feeling of warmth and sound of a parent's heartbeat is relaxing to a new baby.
- Have your hands free to get things done! As much as we would all love to devote every second to our cutie pies, sometimes there are other things we need (or want!) to do. Baby carriers allow parents to keep their babies happy and nearby while attending to other things.
- Help your baby sleep. Many babies who have trouble taking naps will sleep soundly in a sling.
- Promote bonding. Baby carriers promote closeness and attachment. Parents and babies learn about each other by being near each other. Moms and dads learn how to interpret their babies' cues and are able to respond to their little ones' needs.
- Nurse discretely. Slings allow mothers to nurse their babies easily and offer a little bit of cover so they don't feel too exposed.
- Easier shopping. Before babies are old enough to sit up in the shopping cart, it is very difficult to grocery shop without a baby carrier. Anyone who has tried to push a stroller and a shopping cart at the same time will know how impossible this is!
- Assist your baby's development. As research on kangaroo care for premature infants has shown, babies respond to touch and being held by growing and thriving.
- Simplify your life with your second little one. Attending to an older child will be easier if you carry your new baby. Both children will gain from your attention and care at the same time.
A baby carrier is high on the list of the majority of moms' most needed items. When you are caring for a baby, anything that makes life easier is certainly welcome! Enjoy carrying your baby and the closeness it brings.
