The first few bowel movements that babies have are dark, green-black and sticky poops called meconium. This is the substance that was in the baby's digestive system while he or she was in the womb. Meconium is usually expelled after a couple days.
Later, breastfed babies have yellowish mustardy stools. Formula fed babies' poops are more the consistency of peanut butter. Babies can have from 1 to 10 poopy diapers per day.
If you have any concerns about the appearance or consistency of your baby's stool, don't hesitate to contact your pediatrician. Hard, dry stools are a sign of constipation. Watery, stinky poop is a sign of diarrhea. Always have diarrhea checked out right away, because of the risk of dehydration for little ones.
