Free Baby Toys You Already Have!

Ever presented your child with a special (and expensive!) new toy, just to watch him play with the box it came in?  Some toys are later a big hit, but others a definite flop.  Luckily, there are tons of things that you already have around the house that will entertain the baby for no cost at all!  Here are some great ideas for babies and toddlers:

  • Pots and pans - If you don't mind a little noise, babies love pounding on pots with big wooden spoons.
  • Nesting measuring cups - fun to bang on the tray of the high chair, nest inside each other or even chew on a little.
  • Tissue box fun - Any parent who has left her baby alone with a box of tissues knows how much he enjoys pulling them all out one by one.  When all the tissues are gone (via baby or via allergy season), stuff it with folded burp cloths for reusable fun!
  • Mailbox - Toddlers love sticking things in things.  This is why the VCR guard was invented, after all.  Cut a slit in a cardboard box and give your toddler a bunch of "mail" to put in there.  The little cards that fall out of magazines, your own junk mail, anything small and sturdy will make great "mail" for your child to play with.
  • Water play - Fill a deep tub with water, take it outside, and let the splashing begin!
  • Pillow tunnel - Set up some pillows across your couch and ottoman or coffee table to make a fun tunnel!  Great for crawling, peek-a-boo and a little game of chase.
  • Just take a look around your own home for more ideas.  Make sure all parts are bigger than the inside of a toilet paper tube (so they won't be choking hazards).  Have fun!
